Why Add Hyperlinks?
Hyperlinks are vital for directing your audience to additional resources, whether it's related content, external sites, or specific sections of your own website. They enhance user experience and can significantly improve your site's interactivity and engagement.
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Enter Edit Mode
To start, navigate to the text block where you want to add a hyperlink. Click to enter edit mode.
Step 2: Select the Text
Click and drag your cursor over the text that you want to hyperlink. This will highlight the selected text.
Step 3: Add the Hyperlink
In the text editor, click on the link button. A new window will pop up, giving you several options for your hyperlink. You can link to a page on your own website or an external site.
For instance, I recently created a landing page for my wife’s publishing company’s promotional event, which required a hyperlink to a charity's website. Here's how I did it:
Open the charity's website and copy the URL.
Go back to the Squarespace editor and paste the URL into the link field.
Step 4: Best Practices for External Links
When linking to an external website, it's a good idea to have the link open in a new tab. This keeps your own site open for visitors while they explore the external content. To do this, toggle the option to open the link in a new tab.
Step 5: Customize the Link Color
To ensure your link stands out, change its color to something that contrasts with the rest of your text. Here’s how:
Click on the color option in the text editor.
Choose a custom color that matches your site’s theme.
Paste the color code if you have one, or select a new color manually.
Step 6: Save and Preview
After setting up your hyperlink and customizing the color, save your changes. Exit the editor and preview your page to ensure the link works correctly and opens in a new tab.
Conclusion
Adding hyperlinks to your Squarespace website is a straightforward process that can greatly improve your site's usability and functionality. By following these steps, you can easily link to external sites or other pages on your site, customize the appearance of your links, and ensure they open correctly for your visitors.
