Step-by-Step Guide to Linking Images on Squarespace
Step 1: Enter Edit Mode
Jump into the edit mode on your page where the image is located. Click on the image you want to link, and hit the pencil icon to open the image block editor.
Step 2: Attach Your Link
Click on the ‘Attach Link’ option in the editor. You’ll be presented with several choices:
External URLs: Ideal for linking to other websites. Paste the URL, and Squarespace will typically suggest opening the link in a new tab to keep visitors on your site as well. This is best practice as it prevents users from navigating away from your site entirely.
Internal Links: Connect your image to another page on your own site. Since visitors won’t be leaving your site, there's usually no need to open these in a new tab.
File Links: Perfect for when you want your image to link to a downloadable file, like a PDF or another image.
Step 3: Customize Link Settings
For each link type, you have the option to open the link in a new tab. While it's recommended to do so for external links, you might choose to keep internal links in the same tab.
Step 4: Save and Test
Once you’ve set up your links, hit save. It’s a good idea to preview your changes to ensure everything works as expected. Click through the images to see how they function and make sure the links open correctly.
Tips for Effective Image Linking
Keep It Relevant: Link images to content that’s relevant to the image itself. This keeps your site intuitive and user-friendly.
Use Clear Visual Cues: Sometimes, it’s not obvious that images are clickable. Consider adding a hover effect or a small icon to indicate that an image contains a link.
Optimize for SEO: When linking to internal pages, use keywords that boost the SEO of the page you’re linking to. This can enhance your site’s overall searchability.
