Why Use Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is an essential tool for any website owner. By connecting your site, you’re letting Google know it exists, which can help improve your search visibility. With Google Search Console, you can:
Track the keywords people use to find your site.
See which pages perform best in search results.
Submit your sitemap for faster indexing.
Get detailed data on how your site appears in search results.
Let’s get started on setting it up!
Step 1: Connect Your Site to Google Search Console in Squarespace
First, log into your Squarespace account:
Go to your dashboard, click on Analytics, and then go to Search Keywords.
In the Search Keywords section, you’ll see a prompt to Verify your site with Google Search Console. Click Connect.
Choose the Google account you’d like to use and follow the prompts. Once connected, it may take up to 72 hours for data to show up in your analytics.
This initial connection allows Google Search Console to start gathering data on how your site performs in search. Now, let’s move on to indexing your entire site to make sure every page can be discovered by Google.
Step 2: Submit Your Sitemap in Google Search Console
After connecting Google Search Console through Squarespace, it’s time to submit your sitemap:
Open Google Search Console and log in with your Google account.
Click on the Start Now button if you’re not already logged in.
In the left menu, go to Sitemaps.
In the URL box, enter your website’s URL followed by /sitemap.xml. It should look something like this:
yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml
.Click Submit to add your sitemap.
Once submitted, Google will periodically check for updates and automatically re-crawl your site, helping new pages and changes get indexed faster.
Step 3: Index New Content Faster with URL Inspection
For those of you publishing blog posts or adding new content frequently, there’s a quick way to get specific pages indexed immediately:
Copy the URL of the new page or blog post.
Go to URL Inspection in Google Search Console.
Paste the URL in the inspection bar at the top and hit Enter. (step #1 in the screenshot below)
If Google hasn’t indexed the page yet, you will want to hit “Test Live URL”. (step #2 in the screenshot below) This may take a couple of minutes.
Once this is finished, you will be able to hit the button to “Request Indexing”. (step #3 in the screenshot below)
This feature is helpful for getting your new content into Google’s index ASAP, which can be especially useful for timely posts or updates. This may take up to 24-48 hours.
Checking Your Keywords and Performance
Once connected, give Google Search Console 72 hours to gather data. Then:
Go back to the Search Keywords section in your Squarespace analytics.
You’ll start seeing the top search terms and keywords that bring visitors to your site, which can guide you on what topics to focus on or optimize further.
Wrapping Up
Connecting your Squarespace site to Google Search Console is a simple but powerful step toward improving your site’s visibility. With your sitemap submitted and your site indexed, you’ll be better positioned to attract organic traffic and track your performance.
