Why Rename Files in Squarespace?

File names are an often overlooked aspect of SEO. A well-named file can contribute significantly to how search engines understand and rank your content. For instance, a file named ‘battlestar-galactica-patch.jpg’ is infinitely more informative to search engines than ‘unsplash-image-bf88.jpg’. Renaming files to reflect their content not only helps with SEO but also keeps your asset library organized and understandable at a glance.

Step-by-Step Guide to Renaming Files

Step 1: Access Your Asset Library

  • Start on your Squarespace dashboard. Navigate to the left-hand menu and find 'Website', then click on 'Assets'. This will take you directly to your asset library, where all your files are stored.

Step 2: Choose a File to Rename

  • Browse through your library and find the file you want to rename. Perhaps it’s an image from a previous tutorial or just a photo that needs a clearer name.

Step 3: Rename Your File

  • Click the three dots next to the file for more options and select 'Rename'. Enter the new name that accurately describes your file and is SEO friendly. Use dashes to separate words, like ‘battlestar-galactica-patch’ or ‘bears-jumping-over-log’.

Step 4: Save Your Changes

  • After typing the new name, hit 'Save'. It might take a second to update, but once it does, your file name will be updated across your site wherever it’s used.

Best Practices for Naming Files

  • Be Descriptive: Use clear, descriptive terms that relate to the content of the file.

  • Use Keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords that enhance your SEO but avoid keyword stuffing.

  • Keep It Simple: While being descriptive, also be concise. Long filenames can be cumbersome and are often truncated in browsers.

Wrapping Up

Renaming files in Squarespace is a small but powerful way to enhance your site’s SEO and keep your digital assets neatly organized. With this new feature, Squarespace has made it easier than ever to manage your content effectively.
