How to Set Up the New Cookie Banner on Your Squarespace Website

If you’ve been using Squarespace for a while, you might have noticed some recent changes to their cookie banner feature. It looks like Squarespace has made a big update to help us better comply with privacy laws and give us more control over how we manage cookies on our websites. This is great news, as it means we now have more flexibility and options to customize our cookie banners.

Why the New Cookie Banner?

The previous cookie banners on Squarespace were a bit limited—they didn’t offer much in terms of styling or content control. With the new update, you can customize the banner to better fit your site’s design and provide clearer options for your visitors. This is especially important for compliance with privacy regulations and creating a better user experience.

Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up the New Cookie Banner

Step 1: Navigate to Cookie Settings

  • Start by logging into your Squarespace dashboard. Go to the settings icon (that little cog) in the bottom left corner. Once you’re in settings, look for ‘Cookies and Data Privacy,’ which is usually the fourth option down under 'Website'.

Step 2: Enable the Cookie Banner

  • Make sure the cookie banner is toggled on. This will activate the banner on your site, making it visible to visitors. It’s a good idea to keep this on to comply with privacy laws.

Step 3: Customize Button Text and Options

  • You now have several options to customize what the buttons on your cookie banner say. You can change the text for the ‘Accept All’ button to whatever you prefer. There's also an option to add a ‘Manage Cookies’ button, allowing users to adjust their cookie preferences. I recommend keeping this on to give visitors more control.

Step 4: Set Up the Banner Layout and Style

  • You can choose where the cookie banner appears on your site. Options include bottom left, top, or across the bottom. I’ve seen a trend towards using the bottom left, but it really depends on your site’s design and your preference.

Step 5: Customize the Banner’s Appearance

  • To match your website’s style, you can change the color theme of the cookie banner. There are several presets like ‘Lightest’ or ‘Darkest,’ and you can further tweak these by going into your site's color settings. If you want the buttons to be a specific color, just head over to your color palette in the ‘Site Styles’ settings and adjust them there.

Step 6: Check Compliance with Additional Tools

  • While the new Squarespace cookie banner offers a lot of flexibility, it’s always good to ensure full compliance with privacy laws. Tools like Termageddon can help set up more advanced cookie management, privacy policies, and terms and conditions if needed. Benefits of the New Cookie Banner

  • Enhanced Control: Customize the look and feel to match your brand’s aesthetics.

  • Better Compliance: Stay updated with the latest privacy laws and regulations.

  • Improved User Experience: Offer clear options to your visitors for managing their cookie preferences.

Wrapping Up

Setting up and customizing the new cookie banner on Squarespace is straightforward and gives you more control over how your site handles cookies. By following these steps, you can ensure your site is both user-friendly and compliant with privacy regulations.
