What Are SEO Titles and Meta Descriptions?

SEO titles and meta descriptions are the text snippets that appear in search engine results. They provide a preview of your page content and help search engines understand what your site is about. A strong SEO title and meta description can:

  • Improve your ranking in search engine results.

  • Increase click-through rates by providing clear, enticing information.

  • Reinforce your brand’s identity.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adding SEO Titles and Meta Descriptions

Step 1: Adding an SEO Title and Meta Description for Your Homepage

Your homepage is the cornerstone of your website, so it needs an optimized SEO title and description. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Log in to your Squarespace dashboard and navigate to Marketing > SEO Appearance.

  2. Under the Home tab, you’ll see fields for the SEO Title and SEO Description.

  3. Enter your SEO title. This should include your brand name and a primary keyword. For example: “Bryan’s Bistro | Farm-to-Table Dining in Nashville.”

  4. Add a compelling meta description, such as: “Experience fresh, locally sourced meals at Bryan’s Bistro in Nashville. Make a reservation today!”

  5. Review the preview to see how your site will appear in search results.

  6. Click Save to apply the changes.

Every page on your site deserves an optimized title and description. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Pages section in your Squarespace dashboard.

  2. Click the gear icon (⚙️) next to the page you want to edit.

  3. Select the SEO tab.

  4. Fill in the SEO Title field with a clear and descriptive title, like: “About Us | Bryan’s Bistro Story.”

  5. Add a meta description that highlights the page content. For example: “Learn about the journey of Bryan’s Bistro and our commitment to farm-to-table dining in Nashville.”

  6. Save your changes.

Repeat this process for all the key pages on your site, such as Services, Contact, or Blog pages.

  • Keep It Concise: SEO titles should be under 60 characters, and meta descriptions should stay under 160 characters.

  • Include Keywords: Use relevant keywords to help search engines understand your content, but avoid keyword stuffing.

  • Use Action-Oriented Language: Encourage clicks with phrases like “Learn more,” “Book now,” or “Discover our story.”
