How to Back Up Your Squarespace Website (Workaround)
Did you know that Squarespace doesn’t offer a built-in way to back up your website? That’s right—if you make a mistake, there’s no “undo” button or way to restore a previous version of your site. But don’t worry, there’s a simple workaround to ensure your content is safe. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to manually back up your Squarespace website by creating a duplicate copy.

Why You Need to Back Up Your Squarespace Website
Squarespace is an amazing platform, but it doesn’t automatically back up your website. That means if you make significant changes or accidentally delete content, there’s no way to roll back to an earlier version. Backing up your site ensures:
Peace of mind: You’ll always have a fallback if something goes wrong.
Safety during major updates: If you’re redesigning or restructuring your site, you can revert to a previous version if needed.
Step-by-Step Guide to Backing Up Your Squarespace Website
Step 1: Access Your Dashboard
To create a backup, start from your Squarespace dashboard:
Click on your logo in the bottom-left corner of the editor to return to the dashboard.
Find the site you want to back up in your list of projects.
Step 2: Duplicate Your Website
Locate the three dots (•••) next to the site you want to back up.
Click Duplicate Website. This creates an exact copy of your site, including all pages, content, and design settings.
Squarespace will show a notification at the top of your screen saying Copying Content. Once completed, the duplicate will appear at the bottom of your dashboard.
Step 3: Rename the Copy
Open the copied website.
Update the site name by including a date in the title (e.g., “My Website - Backup (12.13.24)”). This helps you track when the backup was created.
Save your changes and return to the dashboard.
When Should You Back Up Your Website?
To keep your content secure, it’s a good idea to create backups:
After major updates: Duplicate your site after redesigns, new page additions, or other significant changes.
On a regular schedule: Set a reminder to back up your site every month, two weeks, or whatever frequency works best for you.
Wrapping Up
While Squarespace doesn’t offer built-in backups, duplicating your website is an easy workaround to protect your hard work. Whether you’re preparing for a redesign or just want peace of mind, taking a few minutes to create a backup is worth it.
