Why Password Protect Your Site?
Password protecting your site can be crucial during the building phase. It allows you to share your progress with clients or team members without giving them carte blanche to make changes. It’s like showing someone your half-finished masterpiece without handing over the paintbrush!
Step-by-Step Guide to Password Protecting Your Squarespace Site
Step 1: Dive into Settings
Head over to your Squarespace dashboard and click on 'Settings'.
Make sure you’re in the 'Website' settings tab on the left-hand side.
Step 2: Adjust Site Availability
Look for 'Site Availability' at the top of the settings list.
You’ll see a few options here: Public, Password Protected, and Single Sign-On Protected. We're going for 'Password Protected' today.
Step 3: Set Your Password
Once you select 'Password Protected', you’ll be prompted to set a password. Keep it simple yet secure. I typically go with something straightforward like 'pass'—easy for clients to remember but, of course, feel free to choose what suits your security needs best.
Step 4: Save and Share
Don’t forget to hit 'Save' to apply your changes.
To share your site, just copy the URL up to ".com" and skip any additional slashes or config tails. Paste this into an incognito window to test what your client will see.
Tips for Sharing Your Password-Protected Site
Use Incognito Mode for Testing: Open an incognito window to enter the site as your client would. This helps ensure that your browser doesn’t auto-fill the password, giving you a true client-side experience.
Communicate Clearly: Make sure to send clear instructions to your clients about how to access the site, including the password and what they can expect to find.
Wrapping Up
That’s all there is to it! Password protecting your Squarespace site is a breeze once you know where to look and what to do. This feature is perfect for anyone who needs to keep their work private while still sharing progress with stakeholders.
